What's Stopping You?

10879770070?profile=RESIZE_710xLast year I posted about the 3 P'S from the book Fanatical Prospecting by Jeb Blount. Procrastination, Perfectionism and Paralysis by analysis. These factors don't just apply in sales.

I keep them in mind and am better at taking action when I recognise when I am procrastinating - but like most people still fall into my comfort zone from time to time, especially when I am not sleeping well.

At the time the other two gave me pause for thought.

I am not usually a perfectionist, as my colleagues who are constantly correcting my spelling and grammar will attest, but I do have a tendency to overthink. However having set out on a goal this year to write a regular blog I seem to have met my match.

I am used to writing for social media, reports, keeping notes even occasionally writing fiction. But blog writing appears to have awakened an unhealthy Perfectionism and Paralysis by Analysis. Even some helpful prompting from Athole Forbes hasn't got the words flowing freely yet, though in my head I have plenty to say.

I am not used to not finishing what I started - so I am determined to get there!

Do you ever hit self imposed barriers? What do you recognise in yourself - and what makes you get going?

Are there any ardent blog writers out there who have tips to share?

  • I like you, i procrastinate more when my sleep is disturbed.

I task myself with do 5 things a week I am uncomfortable with.

    • Great tip Leigh!

  • Good post, Helen. I used to proof and proof content that was going online, sometimes missing the window to post it! Two pieces of advice I heard helped - 'It's better 95% and out there than 100% and never posted' and 'What's the worst thing that could happen??'!

    • ... there is always someone who will correct my spelling!

    • That's good advice Andrew, thank you. Better to get something out than nothing!

  • I often write blog posts, in fact now have a number saved in my drafts.

Sometimes I have periods where I write a lot, other times very little.

Even ended up collecting a number of blog posts into my more recent books (no grand plan).

One tactic is to get people to send you questions, which you can then answer in your blog posts. I usually just write about creating my products, or anything that interests me that is relevant to what I do business-wise.

    • That's an excellent idea Simon. Thank you.

  • My biggest barrier in nearly everything I do is confidence. Once I can get over that I'm usually okay.

I wish I was an ardent blog writer!

  • Haven written blogs for years I can say that it does get easier. The best way to tackle blog posts is to think about what is your reader going to get out of it.

Is a question going to be answered? Are they going to learn something new about you or your business they never knew before?

Blog posts don't have to be sell, sell, sell they can just be a story or a fun tidbit from your life or work that you think people will relate too!

    Hope that helps!

    • Great advice Aimee, thank you. I'll definitely keep that in mind when I'm writing.
