Portrait or Landscape?

Ok, so we are all seeing a lot of video content these days.

Maybe it's me being old fashioned but.....

What shape is your TV?

What shape is the standard Youtube video?

Just because you use your phone in portrait mode generally does not mean you need to shoot video that way.

Turn it 90 degrees and I'm sure your video will benefit.

Let's end the big black lines on either side and shoot video the way it was meant.

Or....am I missing something?

Always open to a persuasive argument...:-)

  • Hi Mike! It's due to rise in social media, portrait videos will fill the screen when scrolling on Facebook for example, which means more people are likely to stop and watch for longer than a few seconds.

    • Hi Jess, not really convinced by that argument. Would much rather see a landscape video on my phone than a portrait one.

I will turn my phone landscape to get the full effect.

The portrait video seems to gets cropped on Facebook? So you are potentially losing control of what's being shown?

I just think we are so used to holding the phone a certain way we don't realise the full power of landscape?

You just need to watch videos captured on people's phones on the news or something to know that it would have been better to shoot in landscape?

Ok, I challenge you to shoot your next video in both portrait and landscape and put it to the vote...:-)
