I HATE THIS!

If I had £1 for every time someone said "I HATE having my photo taken", I'd be arich man! Lets face it, most people really don't like having their photo taken so it's my responsibility to guide people though the experience to a great outcome. I'm preparing for my Aberdeen headshot day this Sunday and it got me thinking about how I help my clients prepare for their session.  Here are 3 Things That Make a Better Headshot...

Good Lighting
An experienced headshot photographer will use light in the way that accentuates your unique features. Professional studio flash lighting, soft boxes, grids, umbrellas, reflectors, v-flats, black flags, colour gels and a million other tools can be used to sculpt the light and show you at your best. Sometimes, simple window-light is the best option. A good photographer will know how to use light in different ways to show you at your best.

Simple Clothing
A headshot is not a fashion shoot and your clothing shouldn’t be a distraction. Black or grey will work for most people or you could consider colours that will compliment your eyes, hair or complexion. Always take a few options! Your shoes might not be in the photo, but a good pair of shoes can make you feel that little bit more special, and that will show in your expression!

Background
The background is so important in a headshot and, like your clothing, it shouldn’t be distracting. A clean, white background has its place but can sometimes be too cold. Grey can give a surprisingly warm feel or maybe an out-of-focus environment is the best look for you and your brand. The background can add some depth to the photo but, once more, it shouldn't distract from the main subject - you! An experienced headshot photographer will know good places to shoot or will quickly be able to make the absolute best of a bad location using a combination of positioning, camera settings and lighting.

I hope that helps you as you prepare for your next headshot session. You can update your Headshot at my next Headshot Days coming up in Aberdeen and Glasgow - http://www.grahamdargie.co.uk/booking
