Finding the perfect photographer

We all know how important it is to make a great first impression - this first impression is now often made online, whether that is through your social media channels or your website. A great photographer will create a beautiful and varied selection of on-brand images for you to use across all of your marketing channels. Helping you tell your brand story and attract your ideal client.

Have you ever googled photographers in your area and found the sheer amount of options overwhelming? It's safe to say that there are probably hundreds of photographers in Aberdeen and surrounding areas, many of which are very talented, but how do you know which one is right for you?

These are my top tips to find the perfect photographer for you!

Find a specialist
If you are looking for a brand or headshot photographer, make sure you book a photographer who has experience in that field. You need someone who knows how to create beautiful engaging images that will elevate your brand and show your potential clients who you are and what you do.

Check out their work
Go to the photographers website and social media platforms. The quality and style of the photographers work should be the first thing that captures your attention. Look at all the images in their portfolio, does the style speak to you? Do you like the colour tones, posing and emotion in their photographs? Great photography is more than just a pretty picture, it should show connection, emotion, and tell the story of you and your brand.

Read reviews

In our online age, it's easy to find reviews for businesses on Google, Facebook and various other places. Have a look and see what past clients said about their experience working with the photographers you shortlisted.

Have a chat with the photographer
Once you found a photographer whose style appeals to you, get in touch and arrange to have a chat with them. Make sure you connect with them and you like their personality, you can normally tell within a few minutes if you feel a connection. A phone or video call will also give you the opportunity to ask them all the questions that might concern you.

The consultation is one of my favourite parts, I love hearing all about my clients, their business, their ideas for the photo session and answering any questions that may come up.

Availability
This can be an important point, especially if you are working to a deadline. Many photographers are booked up weeks, sometimes even months in advance, if you need a photographer for a special occasion or need the photographs to be ready for a certain date, be sure to check your photographer's availability - not only for the photo session, but also for the post-processing and delivery of your images.

Budget
Personally, I find it important to be out front with my pricing and don't have any hidden costs. When you speak with your photographer, be sure to ask about the cost and any potentially hidden charges.

I hope you found my top tips to finding your perfect photographer useful!

If you have any questions or would like to arrange a chat to find out more, please feel free to get in touch anytime. I'd love to hear all about you and your business.
Thanks, Iska

Yes, thanks! All good here. How are you?

  • Hi Iska - Love these tips. Might sound daft, but I would probably never have thought of getting in touch with a photographer in advance to discuss my ideas. I'd have assumed they wouldn't have time and made my choices purelty by looking at their work. Also, love the examples, really vibrant.

    • Thank you for sharing your thoughts, John. I'm happy to hear that the tips help.

As a photographer, I think it's important to understand what my clients are looking for and how I can help them achieve that. Having a chat beforehand helps to set the right expectations as well.
