Career-switching

I used to work in HR, and I found changing to my current role really beneficial for myself and my career. As such, I am a big advocate for career-switching: sometimes it can be exactly what you need. In the wake of the pandemic and the effects this has had on the workplace, lots of people are now reviewing their careers or looking for new roles.

“We’ve officially crossed over into the second half of 2021, and in any other year pre-COVID, you’d likely pause and reflect, career-wise, on where you’ve been and where you’d like to go. But if you’re like most people, the pandemic threw a wrench (and possibly an accelerant) into that process.”
Has a change of career benefited you?

  • Ah yes, very relatable. I was a holocaust and genocide researcher and was included in excavations of missing people as well. It wasn't until my pregnancy I didn't have the stomach for it anymore and I had to make a shift for my own mental health. I can imagine that during covid a number of people had to make a switch like this.

    • What an interesting career you have had Susanne Grant although you must have witnessed some horrific things, I can imagine it was a rewarding role?

  • Great post!

I have switched my career up a couple of times and I am a lot happier for it. I know those who are still doing the same thing because they always have and are unhappy for it.  I will always be grateful to myself for taking the leap and who knows it may happen again.

    • It does take courage to make the move to a new career Siobhan Jaffray but once you have taken the leap of faith it can work out for the best as long as you put in the effort and have a good support network behind you! 😁 I love seeing your progression with your new career, you are a real inspiration ❤

      • Oh Nicky thanks so much that means a lot!

        • ♥️

  • I think you make an excellent point!

many of us went into our careers many years ago, and what suited us as young people may not suit us later in life. interests change, as do responsibilities and ultimately we are different people altogether.

I changed my career twice now. Both times it was terrifying yet completely liberating and exhilarating.

    • That's true Chris Geary we can change significantly over the years and as we accumulate skills and experience, our preferences on our career choices can change. It can be a scary prospect to make the switch in career, particularly when we have others relying on us, such as a partner, children etc. However, as you say it can be liberating and exhilarating when we do! 😀

  • I'm not sure some people are feeling the benefits yet, the transition from where they were, maybe in a successful business that has not survived through the COVID period has left some people still raw, maybe reflection can only happen once real normality is back, and the realisation that this is the new you for the forseeable future.

    • There have been a number of COVID casualties in the business world Avril Crossley which is heartbreaking, and as you say many people have been left raw. Hopefully good things can come out of these situations.
