Writing A Book: What To Write About

Writing A Book: What To Write About

Always wanted to write a book, and not sure what to write about? Perhaps you have a few ideas already, or not sure where to start.

While you shouldn't write a book just for the sake of writing a book, here are a few ideas to get you thinking...

  • How to start a similar business.
  • Beginners books, or “how to” books, helping people use particular tools or technology.
  • History of your local area (if history is something you are interested in/know about).
  • Self help books.
  • Coaching hints and tips.
  • What you wish you'd known when you started your business or in your area of work.
  • Hints and tips and how they have worked for your clients.
  • Help others avoid same obstacles and problems.
  • Reference book, e.g. problems and solutions.
  • Get people to send you questions and answer them in your book.
  • Motivation / inspiration. Although do people REALLY want to read your life story?
  • Stories, examples and how you have helped clients.
  • What can you explain really well? Share your knowledge!

This is not an exhaustive list - and there are so many other possibilities - however hopefully it will give you some inspiration.

Be creative, imaginative and unique.

Don't worry too much about how to write, formatting, etc. - just make some form of start. You can always worry about formatting later on. And remember - many people always talk about their ideas, and never start or do anything about it!

Will people want to read your book? Is it too niche or not niche enough? Remember you can't please everyone - and there is a good chance someone has already written about what you want to write about - so don't let this stop you working on your book.

When writing a book, and considering ideas, the key things are...

  • Write what you know about.
  • Make sure it's something you actually have enthusiasm for. If you don't care about what you are writing about, then that is how it will come across to readers of your book.
  • Don't write with the intention of making some quick money or a passive income. Ignore the YouTube videos that constantly promise this.

When you are at a meeting - what is the one thing that you can talk about with enthusiasm, to the point that you annoy people because you can't stop talking about it?

Look at existing content you can collect into your book and use as a starting point. Blog posts are a great example of this. Also look at any notes from podcasts, videos, etc. If you have enough items with a particular theme, then a lot of work on your book may already be done - although still some work to do - its not a case of just copying & pasting!

If you are not currently writing blog posts - why not start now? With the intention of collecting into a book. It's also a great opportunity to try different ideas. You'll be surprised how it builds up - and is a great motivation for writing content for your book.

When you start work on your book, and if you decide it's not something you want to continue with - also remember that any unused book ideas can also be repurposed into blog posts.

If you decide to write more then one book, each book should be able to be read on its own, even if it does form part of a series.

Think about the reader of your book - don't turn your book into a glorified sales pitch for your business.

Don't even think about cutting corners! Remember - its your name on the book cover.

Finally, a book takes as long as it takes to write and put together - don't be tempted by the “make a book in 7 days” challenges that often appear online.

Hopefully this blog post has given you some ideas, hints and tips to help you think about your book ideas - and if you'd like any help, let me know...
