Networking - Just Chat!

When we’re out networking, it’s a conversation, not a business promotion interview

Company propaganda is, well, company propaganda! And it’s too long and boring when we go networking. Yes, we should be able to succinctly and professionally sum up what our business/organisation does (the first question we’re often asked is ‘So what do you do?’), but we’re trying to get a conversation and hopefully a relationship going. So how do we do that?

The most important thing to remember is to be yourself and just chat normally. When you do this you relax (and it shows), are true to yourself (this also shows) and what you have to ask and say flows much more easily. Imagine you were chatting with someone at the football, in a pub or a queue at the airport. Just chat, whether the conversation is all work, non-work or a mixture of the two

And it’s ok to have some key points that you’d still like to put across, especially with attendees you’re meeting for the first time. Your business/organisation is paying for you to be there so there’s nothing wrong with sharing succinctly what you do and how well you do it!
