What was your weekend highlight?

First weekend in April is a real feature in the calendar year for me. Being a golfer, the first of the Majors takes place at Augusta. It signals the start of the golfing season. Somewhat dodgy weather at times this weekend, just when we thought perhaps the snow had gone ! It also tends to coincide with my birthday so its another year older. I was really pleased for Hideki Matsuyama who won his first Major at the age of 27 and in doing so became the first Japanese Male winner of a golfing Major. Golf is a big sport in Japan and cultural beliefs will ensure Hideki is a hero in his country.

Being mindful and in the moment appears in quite a few of the posts on ABN. With fans at an event for the first time in a year and the worlds media, not to mention most of Japan and eastern hemisphere watching and willing you to do well, there had been enormous pressure upon young Hideki`s shoulders and when he hit his first drive right into the forest at the first hole, he dropped a shot and his overnight 4 shot lead was suddenly one as Will Zalatoris a young feldgling Anerican playing in his first Masters had birdied the first two holes. Zalatoris would finish 2nd. Great event for Scotland`s Robert McIntyre from Oban playing his first masters. He finished in Top 12 so guarantees an invite next year.

What really impressed me about Matsuyama was how he remained grounded, took each shot at a time and stayed in the present moment even when things were not going for him near the end. A fantastic achievement.

Whilst this is a sporting moment and golf may not be your interest, I`ve just listened the afternoon to two podcasts, one about Leadership in business and the other a golfing topic. What commonly came up as helpful? Mindfulness and meditation.  Seems pretty topical.

  • Hi, we were all watching the masters in our house too.  I'm not a golfer but with a son who has recently turned pro, and has big dreams of one day playing in these big tournaments, I know all the chat.  Agree with you that the mindfulness skills required for sport, especially golf, are definitely useful in business as well. Like how you have picked up on the cultural aspect too - that interests me even more than the golf (though not my son's game obviously!)

    • Thank you Alice. All the best to your son in his quest. Mental skills will play a huge part in his development. I produced an e book earlier in the year when I qualified as a Mind Factor Certified Coach on the mental aspects of the game. Its certainly helped me recover why I started playing golf in the first place. If you want a copy, let me know your e mail and I will send this over.

      • Hi Brian, that would be great. It's alice.arandia@finchservices.co.uk

        MANY thanks

  • Loved the Masters too! Brilliant win for Hideki. Great composure with such a big lead and all the pressure and expectation

    • Thanks Andrew. Its a great success story for him.

  • Mindfulness and meditation sure are a popular topic, but that's a great thing! Happy birthday, and i'm glad you got to enjoy the golf!

I really have no idea about golf i'm afraid, so my weekend highlight was (another!) long walk with my puppy and baby. It's tricky to balance but they're both amazing!

    • I`m sure that had been amazing for you having two valuab le things in your life and spending time with them.
