I’d love to hear your feedback and opinions on meditation for golfers.

I’ve been using meditation as a tool for at least 3 decades, and in my teachings as a Wellbeing Coach for children and adults, I think it’s one of the most powerful habits one can develop for a strong mind.

Do you struggle with your mindset after a ‘poor’ shot?

“The game of golf is 90% mental and 10% physical.” This quote has been used by Jack Nicklaus many times to help describe how tough the game really is. So why don’t we hear of more golfers implementing meditation into their routine?

A positive mindset is important but more critical is your ability to not let the negative, self limiting thoughts of the ‘poor’ shots follow you to the next hole. Anger, anxiety and self judgement can follow you around the course like a black cloud. Your body and face can stiffen up, you can feel hot, tingly and your heart rate rises, none of which are conducive to a good shot. Controlling your heart rate is important in all of your shots, the video will demonstrate a very easy way to bring your heart rate down quickly with some diaphragmatic breathing and a visualisation exercise to ground you and make you fully present for your next fantastic shot.

In the words of the late great Arnold Palmer, “Success in golf depends less on strength of body than upon strength of mind”

  • Ace, thanks for this Jen. Gonna check it out later today (better focus on work for today. Golfing, sorry, networking on the course tomorrow and Friday tho!)

  • Interesting. I don't play myself but never really think about meditation in sports! I can see benefits since reading your post. Andrew Smith would be the man to ask re golf!
