Curious... Did you stay true or jump ship?

I’m just curious to know if anyone is like me.... So my background is Law. I’m a trained solicitor and also have my Masters degree with commendation in International Commercial Law from University of Aberdeen which I really enjoyed (Oh I did).

but then I jumped ship when I found something I really loved and totally great at. At first it wasn’t funny to my dad who is also a Barrister with his own law firm back home but I guess over the years I have proved my commitment to my work and building it. Hahaha. So yea a huge change there for me and great transferable skills as well which I will speak about in another post I guess.

For now I just want to know who is like me and who stayed true to their field. Let’s chat

  • Hi Ola,

Good post, its good to find out a little more about people and hear about their backgrounds. I trained as a Barrister and a Solicitor so both of those bases covered. I always thought I wanted to do law as it intrigued me.. at law school I was told I had a flare for the 'gab' in other words talking and should become an advocate/barrister.

From there I became a criminal lawyer but now deal with corporate criminal law; helping businesses when they get it wrong. So I get the benefit of handling interesting criminal cases but with defendents dressed in suits and not those who would rather throw 💩 poo (thats a story for another time)...

So although my career has led me down a different 'wave', I did not jump ship... (see what I did there). 🤪😂

  • I was in hospitality for a long time before jumping ship and moving to serviced offices. I see a lot of similarities with the roles the hours are just a lot more sociable doing what I do now.

    • Yes Siobhan.

there would be a lot of transferable skills there.
I bet you are enjoying where you are now lol.

  • I think some people are just fortunate to nail their passion first time round. For others (like me) it had to evolve - come to a place of discovery over time. I guess there's where comes the phrase "follow your passion". Career does not alway = passion.

    • Hmmm I see what you means there Oyin. I'm guessing you also jumped ship then.

  • I've had a similar experience to Simon by the sounds of it.  Working in IT offers a very large field to work in.  While it's not aways easy to jump over and perform a different role, it is definely possible and can give you different rewards.

    • You are right Steven. IT is really wide in its services.

  • Been tempted to "jump ship" a few times in past - although think closest I've gone is that my degree is in software development, but I have gone and done technical support work at various points in the past.

And I guess running a business, etc. is a whole skill and field all within itself too. :-)

    • You bet Simon. Lol. Hope you are keeping well?
