After Life Insurance

After Life Insurance

Have you watched After Life? What did you think?

I have written a quick piece on the mention of Life Insurance in the series and how it really does make you think...

WARNING MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

As someone new to the world of financial advice I have found it amazing how many TV series/films are revolved around financial matters. Netflix has certainly been leading on this over the past few months with series like the Tinder Swindler, Inventing Anna and even After Life.

After Life is primarily a comedy series where Ricky Gervais character Tony is suffering from the bereavement of his wife. Throughout the 3 series we see Tony struggle to come to terms with losing the love of his life and how he deals with her loss. On the forefront this seems like a grim comedy series, but I can assure you it is certainly handled in a very tasteful way.

One of the things that popped out of the series was the way Tony addressed his wife’s Life Insurance policy. The scenario appeared in an episode that spanned the remainder of the third series where Tony had received a cheque for £150,000 from his wife’s life insurance provider but Tony didn’t want to cash the cheque in because ‘why would he want the money that was a result of his wife’s death?’ Initially he was very bitter towards the subject and despite his friends encouraging him to cash the cheque he refused.

The turning point was when Tony was given a motivational speech from another character about how his wife would have wanted him to cash the cheque in because she had prepared and paid into a policy incase something like that were to happen so that Tony could be financially comfortable in a very difficult time. This led to him cashing in the cheque. What Tony did next with parts of the cash was uplifting, he donated, he made a difference to others around him, he corrected wrong doings the world had done to innocent people. Tony saw that even though he didn’t need/want the money he could carry on his wife’s caring and generous legacy by using what she had prepared for good deeds. This in turn brought him joy and peace and closer to his wife in a time he needed it most.

What After Life has shown us is that Life Insurance is something we all need to consider, as individuals we will not benefit from our own Life Insurance, but we can help those we love at a time where they probably need us most.
